Ball State’s baseball team recorded a pair of wins in the Cardinals’ doubleheader at home over Eastern Michigan Saturday in Mid-American Conference action.

The Cardinals raced out to a 20-5 win in the first game behind five doubles and the strong pitching effort of Scott Baker.  Ball State managed a 7-3 win in the second contest of the day behind the pitching of T.J. Weir and a Sean Godfrey fourth inning grand slam.

The doubleheader was scheduled due to a postponement of Friday’s game due to weather and field conditions.  The two teams will complete the three-game series with a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday at Ball Diamond.

With the pair of wins, the Cardinals improved to 21-10 overall and 6-1 in the MAC, while Eastern Michigan fell to 10-17 overall and 1-7 in league play.

In the first game, Ball State rallied for 16 runs in the first four innings, while limiting Eastern Michigan to one score and the Cardinals held a 16-1 lead through four.  Despite the Eagles scoring runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames, Ball State continued its offensive onslaught with scores in every inning but the eighth to seal the 20-5 victory.

Godfrey was 4-for-4 in the first game with five runs-batted-in and four runs scored.  Sean Kennedy managed a 4-for-5 performance with three RBI and two runs scored.  Caleb Stayton went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Kyle Raleigh tallied three hits in four at-bats with one RBI.

Baker pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out four to improve to 5-2 on the season.  B.J. Butler, Matt Johnsen and David Current pitched the final three innings to finish out the win.

In the second game, Godfrey was once again the offensive catalyst and with Ball State leading 2-0 in the fourth inning, hit his sixth home run of the season – a grand slam that gave the Cardinals a 6-0 advantage.  Godfrey completed the second game with one hit in five at-bats and four RBI.

Eastern Michigan was able to score one in the sixth, seventh and eighth to close the gap to 7-3, but Ball State held on to seal the 7-3 victory with 10 hits on the day.

Kennedy was 2-for-4 in the second game with two runs scored, while Brandon Estep managed a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored.

In the two games Saturday, Godfrey was 5-for-9 with nine RBI and five runs scored.

Weir went seven innings in the second game, allowing only two earned runs, and striking out nine.  Tyler Jordan finished off the Eagles by pitching the final two innings, allowing only one earned run and striking out seven.  With the win, Weir improved to 3-1 on the season.
