Baseball Wins Season Opener 7-4 over USC Upstate

Ball State's baseball team opened the 2014 season with a 7-4 win at USC Upstate with senior Tyler Jordan earning the victory.

The Cardinals fell behind 4-1 through four innings before exploding for four runs in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh to earn the victory.

Tyler Jordan earned the victory after pitching five innings, allowing only two hits and no runs, while striking out two.  Scott Baker started the contest and allowed only two earned runs and striking out three.

Ball State scored its first run of the game in the third inning on a Sean Kennedy single, and Alex Call bunt and an Alex Maloney fielder's choice.  Maloney, a freshman making his first start, recorded his first career run-batted-in.

The fifth inning saw the Cardinals get on the board with Brandon Estep leading off the frame with a home run to right field.  Call reached on a trhowing error and scored Caleb Stayton on the play.  Sean Godfrey's two RBI double to right center scored Ryan Spaulding, who walked to get on base, and Call.  Ball State managed a four-run inning on two hits.

Sam Tidaback was hit by a pitch to reach first in the sixth inning, and scored on a pass ball. 

The seventh inning featured back-to-back singles by Maloney and Spaulding and when Godfrey grounded into a double play, Maloney scored the seventh run of the game for the Cardinals.

Estep tallied three hits in four at-bats with one run scored and one RBI on the day.  Kennedy was 2-for-4 with one run socred, while Call was 1-for-3 with one run scored.  Godfrey, Maloney and Spaulding all added hits on the day, while Godfrey led the team with two RBI.

Ball State is scheduled to play two games Sunday and one game Monday in Spartanburg, S.C.  The Cardinals are scheduled to face Morehead State at 10:30 a.m. and Wofford at 2:30 Sunday.
