Ball State baseball has announced the naming of Jacob Brewer and T.J. Weir as team captains for the 2013-14 season, according to head coach Rich Maloney.

“Naming T.J. Weir and Jacob Brewer team captains was an excellent selection by our team,” Maloney says. “Both veteran players have exhibited great work ethic, determination, passion and enthusiasm to be their best.  With their experience and desire to see Ball State baseball succeed, they will push the other players to continue to raise the level of our program.”

Brewer, who sat out the 2013 season due to injury, pitched in 16 games, including seven starts, in 2012 to earn his second letter.  He pitched a career-high eight innings against Eastern Michigan, as he allowed three runs on four hits in a no decision.  Brewer pitched in eight Mid-American Conference games, including four starts.

Weir, a senior infielder/pitcher, appeared in 48 games with 45 starts in 2013.  He made 16 appearances on the mound and tallie 60 strikeouts in 60 innings, while finishing with a 3.90 earned-run average.  Weir also tallied 11 multi-hit games and five mult-RBI games as a junior.  He was fifth on the team with 74 total bases, tallied a .438 slugging percentage and had a 3-2 pitching record with a team high three saves in 16 appearances.

Ball State managed a 31-24 overall record last season, including a 15-12 MAC mark.  The Cardinals advanced to the championship game of the MAC Tournament in Maloney's first year back at the helm.  Ball State is slated to open the 2014 season Feb. 14, vs. Morehead State in Spartanburg, S.C.
