Ball State’s baseball team tallied a 4-3 victory in an exhibition game with the Ontario Blue Jays in a contest that was planned for 12 innings.

The Cardinals tallied the winning run in the bottom of the 12th after Sean Kennedy walked to start the inning and scored on an Alex Maloney double to give Ball State the victory.

T.J. Weir started on the mound for Ball State and pitched a pre-determined three innings, striking out four and allowing no hits to the Blue Jays.  Scott Baker, Clay Mannering, Chris Lovejoy and Tyler Jordan pitched the remainder of the game for the Cardinals.  Mannering went three innings, allowing no runs, while Lovejoy pitched two frames and struck out three batters and gave up no hits.  Jordan pitched the 12th inning and allowed only one hit and no runs.

Maloney led all Ball State hitters with a 2-for-4 performance while playing shortstop and third base.  Maloney had one run-batted-in and scored one run.  Kennedy was 1-for-2 from the plate with one run scored.  Ryan Spaulding, Sean Godfrey and Cole Griesinger each added hits for the Cardinals in the win.

The Ontario Blue Jays were made up of players from the Canadian National Junior program and recently won the Mickey Mantle World Series.  The team plays Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and Kent State from the Mid-American Conference this fall plus Notre Dame and Iowa in addition to the Cardinals.  The Ontario Blue Jays play in the Premier Baseball League of Ontario with teams ranging from Toronto to Ottawa to Windsor.

Ball State, under the direction of head coach Rich Maloney, ended the 2013 season with a 31-24 overall record and managed a 15-12 MAC mark.  The Cardinals finished second in the MAC West Division and advanced to the MAC Tournament Championship Game.

Baker was named the MAC Pitcher of the Year, while Sean Godfrey was named to the All-MAC Second Team.  Baker ranked fifth in the nation in victories and was named the MAC Pitcher of the Week five times in 2013.
