AVON, Ohio. - The fourth-seeded Ball State baseball team pulled off the 3-1 Mid-American Conference Tournament upset over top-seeded Kent State Friday morning at All-Pro Fright Stadium.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 30-23 on the season while the Golden Flashes drop to 35-22.  Ball State advances to Game 11 of the MAC Tournament Saturday against the winner of Kent State versus No. 5 Miami contest which is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

The last time Ball State started off 2-0 in a MAC Tournament was in 2006.  That year the Cardinals earned victories over Western Michigan (6-2), Central Michigan (12-5) and then Kent State twice (5-4) (7-4).

T.J. Weir threw his first complete game of the season improving his mound record to 4-2 after 9.0 innings of work he gave up one run off of seven hits while striking out seven batters.

After a scoreless first inning, Ball State scored in the top of the second after Blake Beemer and Billy Wellman both reached base after Kent State fielding errors.  T.J. Weir reached first base on a fielders choice which allowed Beemer to cross the plate.

With no outs Kent State loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth.  T.J. Sutton would then fly out to Beemer who then made the throw to home plate for the double play.  Ryan Spaulding made the last play after catching a foul ball by the right field stands to end the inning for the Cardinals.

In the ninth inning, Ball State added two runs off of no hits.  With bases loaded Kent State walked Cody Campbell which brought home DeVarie who reached base after being hit by a pitch.  Beemer would then ground out to second securing another run from Spaulding.

Weir managed to shoutout the Golden Flashes up until the bottom of the ninth.  Kent State would cross the plate once with two outs on the board making it a 3-1 ball game.  Elbert DeVarie threw Troy Summers out at second to end the ball game.

The No. 4 Ball State baseball team is tentatively scheduled to play its next game at 9 a.m. Saturday.
