Baseball Team Defeats Purdue 4-3 at Ball Diamond
Ball State's baseball team handed Big Ten Conference opponent Purdue a 4-3 loss at Ball Diamond Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 24-20 overall, while the Boilermakers fell to 16-28 on the season.
In Wednesday's game, all the scoring took place in two innings. Purdue jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second before a Ball State four run seventh frame sealed the victory.
Cameron Schooley recorded the pitching win despite facing only one batter in the eighth, and Miles Moeller recorded his second save of the year after allowing only one hit in the final 1.2 innings. Matt Johnsen went 6.2 innings as the starter, allowing only two earned runs on six hits and striking out three.
The Cardinals closed the gap to 3-2 in the seventh after Blake Beemer walked with one out and Billy Wellman clobbered his third home run of the season. T.J. Weir singled and pinch hitter Jake Hines followed with a single to right field. Elbert Devarie's ground out moved the runners to second and third before Wes Winkle's single to left scored two and put Ball State ahead 4-3.
Winkle was 1-for-4 with two runs-batted-in on the day, while Wellman was 2-for-3 with two RBI nd one run scored. Devarie was 2-for-3 on the day, while Beemer and Weir were each 1-for-3.
Ball State is in second place in the Mid-American Conference West Division and will host Toledo in a three-game league series Friday through Sunday at Ball Diamond. The Rockets enter the Friday contest with a 10-11 MAC mark, while the Cardinals are 11-10 in the league. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Ball Diamond and admission is free.
