Baseball Team Goes 1-1 in Friday's Games

Ball State's baseball team tallied a 7-4 victory over Bradley in Nashville, Tenn., in the first of a four game set of games this weekend.  The Cardinals suffered a 5-2 defeat to Northwestern in the second game of Friday's action.

Ball State, which is now 2-3 on the season, will play at Lipscomb Saturday and face Bradley again Sunday at 11 a.m.

Ball State head coach Rich Maloney has now tallied 599 career victories and needs one to reach the 600-win plateau.

Against the Braves, Ball State fell behind 4-0 after four innings, but rallied for three in the top of the fifth and two more in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.  The Cardinals managed to add on run in the eighth and one run in the ninth to claim the 7-4 win.  Ball State managed seven runs on nine hits, while limiting Bradley to four runs on 10 hits.

Cody Campbell, T.J. Weir and Blake Beemer managed two hits apiece, while Sean Godfrey hit a solo home run in the ninth.

Chris Marangon improved to 1-0 on the mound with the victory.  He pitched six innings to earn the victory, while Weir pitched 1.2 innings in relief to earn his first save of the season.

The Cardinals started their scoring in the fifth on a Campbell single.  Weir and Beemer followed with a pair of singles to load the basses.  Billy Wellman grounded to short, scoring Campbell, and Sam Tidaback's fielder's choice grounder scored Beemer, while a throwing error on the play scored Weir to close the gap to 4-3.

In the sixth, Weir's RBI single scored Godfrey, who reached first after being hit by a pitch.  Wellman managed a sacrifice fly to score Campbell and Ball State took a 5-4 lead.

The eighth inning saw the Cardinals manufacture a run when Elbert Devarie's bases loaded walk scored Weir.  Godfrey's solo homer in the ninth ended the games scoring and solidified Ball State's 7-4 win.

In Ball State's second game of the day vs. Northwestern, the Wildcats took an early 2-0 lead, but the Cardinals managed one run in the bottom of the second to close the gap.  However, a three-run fourth inning by the Wildcats gave them a5-1 edge, and Ball State could manage only one run in the bottom of the eighth to fall 5-2.

Kevin Schlotter managed two hits in four at-bats with one RBI.  Wellman was 1-for-3 with one RBI.  Schlotter's RBI single in the second inning scored Wellman.  Wellman's double in the eighth inning scored Campbell to complete the Cardinals scoring vs. Northwestern.

Nestor Bautista suffered the loss after pitching 3.2 innings and allowing five earned runs, while striking out five.  Clay Manering came on in relief and pitched the final 5.1 innings, allowing zero runs and striking out five.
