SCOUTING BALL STATE:  The Cardinals will open the 2013 season with a three game series at Middle Tennessee Friday through Sunday . . . Ball State owns a 1437-1389-14 all-time record in 2,840 games . . . The Cardinals managed a 14-36 overall record in 2012.

SCOUTING MIDDLE TENNESSEE:  The Blue Raiders are under the direction of first year head coach Jim McGuire (Cumberland '85) . . . He spent the last four years as the head coach at Rend Lake (Ill.) Junior College, where he compiled a 220-116 career record . . . Middle Tennessee posted a 31-28 overall record in 2012 and a 14-16 mark in the Sun Belt Conference . . . Middle Tennessee returns 30 letterwinners, including six returning starters and 14 returning pitchers.

THE SERIES:  Ball State and Middle Tennessee have met two times and the all-time series is tied at 1-1 . . .  The two teams met in 2005 with Middle Tennessee winning the first game 11-2, and the Cardinals winning the second contest 7-4 . . . Both games in the all-time series were played at Middle Tennessee.

TOP HITTER RETURNS:  Sean Godfrey, a junior outfield, led Ball State with a .328 batting average as he posted 43 hits in 131 at-bats in 2012 ... He was second on the team with 24 runs scored while driving in 18 runs ... Godfrey led the team with 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts ... He posted a team-high 10 doubles while also hitting a home run and a triple ... Godfrey was second on the team with a .443 slugging percentage ... He tallied eight multiple-hit games and three multiple-RBI games last season.

BILLY WELLMAN SET FOR JUNIOR SEASON:  Billy Wellman, a junior infielder, posted 33 hits in 102 at-bats for the Cardinals in 2012 ... He was second on the team with 26 RBI while scoring 10 runs as a sophomore ... Wellman tied for the team lead with four home runs while posting seven doubles to lead the team with a .510 slugging percentage in 2012 ... Wellman tallied nine multiple-hit games and a team-high seven multiple-RBI games.

WINKLE RECEIVES SOME PRESEASON CONSIDERATION:  Wes Winkle, a senior outfielder, was named to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Mid-American Conference Second Team . . . Winkle played in 46 games last season as a junior outfielder and finished third on the team with a .307 batting average ... He led the Cardinals with 58 hits in 189 at-bats, primarily from the leadoff position in the lineup ...   Winkle led Ball State with 30 runs scored, while driving in 13 runs in 2012 ... He posted seven doubles and two triples and was second on the team with 12 stolen bases ...   Winkle, who led the team with 19 multi-hit games in 2012, ended the season with a 10-game hitting streak intact.

MARANGON EARNS OPENING DAY START:  Chris Marangon, a senior right handed pitcher, appeared in a team-high 20 games, including nine starts, to earn his first letter in 2012 ... He started the season in the bullpen and moved into the weekend rotation during Mid-American Conference play ... Marangon posted a 3-7 record with a 3.75 ERA in 69.2 innings of work, while posting a team-high two saves ... He struck out 40 batters and walked 25 ... Marangon held opponents to a team-low .222 batting average, which ranked third-lowest in the MAC ... He worked a career-high 8.2 innings against Eastern Michigan (April 21) as he allowed three runs on two hits ... He posted his first career complete game at Toledo (April 29) as he tossed 8.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits ... Marangon picked up his first career victory against Indiana Tech (April 3), working 1.0 innings of shutout relief ... He posted victories in back-to-back games at Northern Illinois (May 17 & 18).

BEEMER READY FOR SENIOR SEASON:  Blake Beemer, a senior outfielder/first baseman, appeared in 48 games, including 46 starts in 2012 ... He finished fourth on the team with a .282 batting average, driving in 14 runs while scoring 13 ... He notched nine doubles and a triple ... Beemer recorded 11 multiple-hit games, including two three-hit games against Tennessee (March 7) and Miami (April 6) ... He hit a career-high three doubles against Miami University ... Beemer drove in a season-high two runs against Miami (April 8) ... He posted a six-game hitting streak April 29-May 11 ... Beemer ended the season reaching base in a career-high 11 straight games from April 29-May 19 ... He started all 27 Mid-American Conference games and finished third on the team with a .301 batting average against league opponents last season.

BAUTISTA AND BAKER ON THE MOUND TO FINISH THE SERIES:  Nestor Bautista, a junior lefthander, appeared in 16 games, including seven starts in 2012 ... He struck out 31 batters while walking 23 ... Bautista worked a career-high 7.0 innings against UAB (Feb. 25) as he shut out the Blazers on just two hits while striking out a career-high seven batters ... He tied his career-high with seven strikeouts at Indiana (April 4) ... Picked up his first career victory in relief against Eastern Michigan (April 22), working 1.2 innings of one-run baseball ... Scott Baker, a sophomore righthander, appeared in 15 games, including three starts in 2012 ... He posted an 0-1 record with a  6.15 ERA in 33.2 innings of work as he struck out 30 batters and walked 23 ... Baker pitched a career-high 5.0 innings against Butler (April 10) at Victory Field ... He struck out a career-high four batters against Butler and Western Michigan (May 6) ... Baker limited the Broncos to just one run on three hits in 3.1 innings of work ... He made starts against Indiana Tech (April 3), Butler and Northwestern Ohio (April 17) in 2012.

LOOKING AHEAD:  Ball State will play in the Lipscomb Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., Fri., Feb. 22 to Sun., Feb. 24 . . . The Cardinals will play Bradley on Friday, Lipscomb on Saturday and face both Bradley and Lipscomb Sunday.
