Men's S&D Ends Coers Invitational Strong
MUNCIE, Ind. – The men’s swimming and diving team turned in great performances and narrowly missed earning the title at the 2012 Doug Coers Invitational. Ball State finished with 701 points and had six individual and one relay win on the second day of competition.
The Cardinals narrowly missed winning the first event of the morning session, the 200 medley relay. The team of senior Michael Weber (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic), junior Joseph Morris (South Bend, Ind./Clay), junior Drew Tharp (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) and junior Shane Brown (Santee, Calif./West Hills) touched at 1:37.05.
Junior Michael Oaks (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) earned an individual win in the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:44.60 and finished second in the 100 free at 48.44. Senior Nicholas Stevens (Greencastle, Ind./Greencastle) finished fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.13, while freshman Cole Smith (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) claimed fourth in the 100 free at 49.83. Sophomore Andrew Lamb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) finished fifth in the 200, touching at 1:48.31. Freshman Austin Goodman (Camden, Ind./Delphi) came in fifth in the 100 (49.95) and eighth in the 200 (1:49.96). Brown came in sixth in the 100 (50.10) and 11th in the 200 free (1:54.47). Sophomore Neal Fenning (Portland, Ind./Jay County) finished eighth in the 100 with a time of 50.87 and turned in a season-best time of 1:51.88 in the 200 for ninth place.
Stevens came in third in the 1650 free with a time of 17:02.68, while Lamb turned in a 17:15.35 for sixth place.
Morris swept the breaststroke turning in season bests in both races. He finished in 57.86 in the 100 breast and 2:08.13 in the 200 breast. Senior David Wood (Swayzee, Ind./Oak Hill) came in third in both races, clocking in with a 1:01.99 in the 100 and a season-best 2:17.18 in the 200. Freshman Jon McCormick (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) finished fourth in the 200 with a season-best time of 2:17.74. Sophomore Connor Snare (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Carroll) finished sixth in the 200 with a time of 2:19.65.
For the second week in a row, Weber claimed two wins in the backstroke. The senior came in at 52.88 in the 100 back and 1:56.50 in the 200 back. Junior Tucker Hale (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) finished fourth in the 100 (54.95) and fifth in the 200 (2:01.66). Sophomore Andrew Sullenbarger (Centerville, Ohio/Carroll) finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 2:00.46. Junior Cameron Watters turned in a fifth place performance in the 100 (57.09) and sixth place finish in the 200 (2:06.45). Smith finished sixth in the 100 with a time of 57.21.
Tharp earned a victory in the 200 fly with a time of 1:54.95 and came in second in the 100 fly with a time of 52.00. Junior Ethan Hall (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) came in sixth in both races with times of 56.08 and 2:06.42, respectively.
The 800 free relay team of Lamb, Morris, Stevens and Oaks earned first place with a time of 7:02.27. The 400 free team of Morris, Hale, Oaks and Weber came in second at 3:09.50.
The men’s swimming and diving team will take break and will return to competition Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 when it travels to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Invitational. Check ballstatesports.com for more news and updates on men’s swimming and diving.
