MUNCIE, Ind. – The men’s swimming and diving team started off the Doug Coers Invitational strongly scoring 234 points in the first session. The Cardinals won three of the five swimming events and the diving event.
The 200 free relay team of senior Michael Weber (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic), junior Michael Oaks (Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community), freshman Cole Smith (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) and junior Shane Brown (Santee, Calif./West Hills) came in second with a time of 1:27.51.
Senior Nicholas Stevens (Greencastle, Ind./Greencastle) turned in a season-best time of 4:40.73 to take second in the 500 free. Sophomore Andrew Lamb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) also clocked in with a season-best time of 4:50.76 for third place. Junior Joseph Morris (South Bend, Ind./Clay) finished in fourth with a time of 4:51.19. Sophomore Neal Fenning (Portland, Ind./Jay County) turned in a season-best time of 5:07.83.
Weber turned in an exciting finish in the 200 IM, coming from behind in the final stroke to capture first place by .13 seconds with a season-best time of 1:54.78. Junior Tucker Hale (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) finished fifth at 2:03.24. Sophomore Connor Snare (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Carroll) and freshman Jon McCormick also turned in season-bests coming in sixth and seventh with times of 2:03.65 and 2:04.49.
In the 50 free, Oaks captured first place with a time of 22.05. Smith, Brown, and Ethan Hall (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) rounded out the top five with times of 22.33, 22.49 and 22.55 respectively. Goodman clocked a season-best time at 22.62 for sixth place. Junior Drew Tharp (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) finished seventh (22.71), sophomore Andrew Sullenbarger (Centerville, Ohio/Carroll) came in tenth (23.19) and senior David Wood (Swayzee, Ind./Oak Hill) came in 15th (23.92).
The 400 medley relay team of Weber, Morris, Tharp and Oaks took first place with a time of 3:29.67.
In the diving competition, junior Jake Brehmer (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) took the 3M with a score of 269.70. Freshman Evan Becker (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) came in fourth with a mark of 214.50.
