MUNCIE, Ind. - Mallory Miles, Haley Richter and Bridgette Ruehl of the Ball State women's swimming and diving team received 2014 Honorable Mention Scholar All-American Awards from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSAA).

“I am extremely proud of these three student-athletes for their hard work in the pool and classroom," Ball State head women's swimming and diving coach Kristy Castillo said. "Their persistence and drive paid off during their final season of collegiate competition.  I’m glad they were able to get recognition for what they have contributed to the team.  It’s great to have representation on a national level for the MAC and the Ball State program.”

The Mid-American Conference had a total of 14 athletes recognized by the CSAA.  This is the second time Miles and Richter have earned the award.

Miles ended her career holding the program records in the 100 fly (53.64), 200 fly (1:59.93) and 200 IM (2:02.73) from the 2013 MAC Championships, the 400 IM (4:20.22) from the 2011 MAC Championships and the 100 back (54.45) at the 2014 MAC Championships.  She ranks second in program history in the 200 back (1:59.45) from the 2014 MAC Championships.

Richter ended her tenure at Ball State as a member of the MAC Champion 400 medley relay that set a school record at the 2013 MAC Championships with a time of 3:39.86.  She swam the butterfly leg of the school-record 200 medley relay at the 2013 MAC Championships that finished fourth with a time of 1:40.53.  Richter was also a part of 400 and 800 free relays that set school record times of 3:24.82 and 7:26.86, respectively, at the 2012 MAC Championships.

This is the first academic honor Ruehl has received from the CSAA.  She concluded her career as only the third athlete in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships.  Ruehl defended her 2013 MAC Championship gold medals in 2014.  She holds the program record in the 100 breast (1:00.58) and 200 breast (2:11.77) set at the 2013 MAC Championship.  Ruehl was also a member of the 2013 and 2014 MAC Champion 400 medley relay, the 200 medley relay that set a school record at the league meet in 2013 with a time of 1:40.53 for fourth place and the 2014 200 medley relay that earned a bronze medal at the MAC Championships.

In order to be named to the honorable mention list swimmers and divers had to achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and have achieved a “B” time standard, but did not qualify to compete in their respective national championship. The athlete’s GPA in the semester/quarter coinciding with the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships determines the honorable mention award.
