Swimming Announces Camp Dates

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State swimming and diving staffs have announced the 35th annual Swim Camp dates which will take place June 15-27 at Ball Pool on Ball State's campus.

All swim camps are designed for young athletes 8-18 years and teach the latest trends and training techniques in swimming. Athletes will learn how to mentally and physically prepare for competition.

The overnight 5-Day Swim Camp costs $570 and runs from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., starting June 15 to June 20.

Ball State will host two 3-day camps, one that begins June 22 and ends June 24.  The last day camp begins June 25 and will conclude on June 27.  The cost for the two 3-day camps are $285.

Additional members of the men’s and women’s coaching staff & student-athletes will be coaches and counselors at camp. Counselors will be living in the residence halls with the campers to assure safety and supervision.

Camp Directors

Bob Thomas – Ball State Men’s Swim Coach
Coach Thomas has spent 31 years as head coach for the men’s swim team and seven years as the co-head coach for the men’s and women’s teams. Thomas is a graduate of Eastern Illinois where he achieved 14 NAIA and NCAA national titles. Prior to his arrival at Ball State, Thomas coached successful USS, high school and junior college teams in Illinois. As a four-time Mid-American Coach of the Year, Thomas has developed 83 MAC champions and numerous Senior National Finalists and Olympic Trial Finalists. He continues his own swimming at the Masters level and is the past Backstroke National Champion in addition to numerous other National Championship titles and national records.

Kristy Castillo – Ball State Women’s Swim Coach
Coach Castillo just finished her second season as head coach for the women’s swim team at Ball State. In the 2012-13 season, the Cardinals accumulated an 8-2 dual record, including going 2-2 in MAC meets. Ball State won four individual medals at the MAC Championship, including three golds. The 400 medley relay also took home a gold medal after setting a school record. Bridgette Ruehl became the third woman in school history to qualify for the NCAA Championships, competing in the 100 and 200 breast. Diver Madie Zirzow also qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving meet.  Before coming to Ball State, Castillo was the assistant swimming coach for nine years at the University of Akron and is the school record holder in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. She has had experience working at the Stanford Swim Camps from 2006-09 as well as the Akron swim camps. In her first year at the helm of the Cardinals, Castillo produced three individual MAC Conference Champions and a championship 400 Medley Relay. A Ball State swimmer also made it to the 2013 NCAA Swimming Championships.
