Ruehl Defends Her 100 Breaststroke Title

GENEVA, Ohio -  Senior Bridgette Ruehl won gold while classmates Mallory Miles and Haley Richter earned bronze medals on the second night of the 2014 MAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. In addition, the 200 medley relay earned a bronze medal to help propel the Cardinals to sixth place overall and 241 total points.

Ruehl defended her 2013 title in the 100 breast and clocked a pool-record, season-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:01.13. Miles started off the morning prelims clocking a school-record, lifetime-best and NCAA B cut time of 54.45 in the 100 back. The senior would finish third in the event finals with a 54.64. Richter was the third Cardinal to earn a medal. Richter touched with a lifetime-best and NCAA B cut time of 53.86 in the preliminaries and finished the finals with a 54.15. Richter’s time puts her second all-time in school history.

The 200 medley relay of Miles, Ruehl, Richter and freshman Jessica Extine clocked a season-best time of 1:41.16 to earn a bronze medal. The time puts the relay second in all-time program history.

Miles also qualified for the event finals in the 100 fly where she finished seventh with a time of 55.37. The senior finished sixth in the morning preliminaries with a season-best 54.65. Senior Emily Wisolek also qualified for an event final after turning in a season-best 1:49.67 in the 200 free. Wisolek finished sixth in the evening finals touching at 1:50.34.

Junior Carlena Magley qualified for the consolation finals of the 200 free after turning in a lifetime-best time of 1:50.86 in the preliminaries which puts her third in school history in the event. Magley would finish 16th in the evening session with a time of 1:52.76. Senior Stacey Wierman earned a berth into the consolation finals of the 100 breast after clocking a season-best 1:04.05 in the preliminaries. Wierman earned 13th place with a 1:04.26.

Junior Jordan VanWinkle moved to a tie for sixth place all-time in program history in the 200 free after turning in a lifetime best 1:51.97 in the preliminaries of the 200 free. Senior Cheyanne Jackson earned a lifetime best in the event with a 1:52.81 while junior Elaine Pitsas finished with a season-best 1:54.95.

Freshman Audrey Rodawig earned 20th place in the morning preliminaries of the 100 fly after turning in a season-best time of 56.85. Freshmen Katie Horn and Jessica Extine both earned lifetime bests with times of 56.88 and 57.63, respectively.

In the 400 IM preliminaries, freshman Kimberly Scott and junior Leighann Mattson both clocked lifetime bests with times of 4:32.86 and 4:37.27, respectively.

Other Cardinals competing on the day included freshman Allie Kolz who earned a lifetime best 59.12 in the 100 back preliminaries and senior Sumaiyah Ahmad who clocked a season-best time of 1:05.94 in the 100 breast preliminaries.

The 800 free relay of VanWinkle, Magley, Jackson and Wisolek finished sixth with a season-best time of 7:27.70 which ranks second in school history.

In the 3-meter diving competition, sophomore Madie Zirzow finished with a score of 205.80 for 22nd place. Freshmen Quinn Bixler and Brittany Penn earned scores of 197.80 and 187.40, respectively.

The seventh session will begin tomorrow at 11 a.m. and will include the preliminaries for the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast and 200 fly. Check for a live webcast and live results.
