MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State women’s golf team will look to build on one of the best years in program history when the Cardinals tee it up Friday at the Mid-American Conference Championships in Nashport, Ohio.

Ball State has already tied a program record for tournament titles in a single season with four. The Cardinals picked up that fourth crown just last weekend at their own Angola Shootout, beating five other MAC teams in the process.

Another one of Ball State’s wins came last fall at The 2012 Preview, played at the same course that will host the MAC Championships -- Longaberger Golf Club. The Cardinals defeated seven conference teams at that event and Ball State junior Meghan Perry was the top individual finisher.

This weekend, Ball State hopes to add to its already impressive season by making a little more history.

Kent State is the lone team to win the MAC Championships since the event began in 1999 and enters as the favorite again this year in the nine-team field. But the Cardinals are one of a handful of teams with aspirations of dethroning the Golden Flashes and grabbing the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA postseason.

Ball State will be able to draw on its recent successes, not only from this year but also from previous league tournaments. The Cardinals have finished among the top 3 in each of the past three years at the MAC Championships, including a runner-up finish last season. Ball State’s Jenna Hague, then a freshman, became just the third non-Kent State golfer ever to win MAC medalist honors a year ago.

Hague is one of four golfers in the Ball State lineup this weekend who also competed last year, joining Perry, Autumn Duke and Zoe Camus. Those four, along with Sarah Westaway, compose an experienced Cardinals group. Head coach Katherine Mowat has penciled those five golfers, in some order, into her lineup for every tournament this year.

Westaway is coming off the top finish of her career at last weekend’s Angola Shootout, where she tied with Hague for second place.

Hague looks to defend her MAC title this week after a season that has featured five top-5 finishes, including titles at the SCU Colby Invitational and the EKU Colonel Classic. She repeated as champion at the Colonel Classic and is hoping to do the same this weekend.

Ohio is serving as the host school for the MAC Championships, which get underway with 18 holes Friday and continue with the second round Saturday and final round Sunday. Ball State’s five golfers have opening-round tee times scheduled Friday from 9:30 to 10:10 a.m.

Longaberger Golf Club will play to a par-72, 6,073-yard layout for the tournament. Live scoring will be available throughout at golfstat.com.
