BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Ball State women’s golf team polished off a five-shot win Sunday at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational.

The Cardinals entered the day with a one-shot advantage on Eastern Michigan and held on to the top spot on a windy day at Stone Ridge Golf Club. Challenging conditions led to higher scores on day two of the tournament.

Ball State posted a final-round score of 324 to close the event at 628 (+52). Eastern Michigan was second at 633, while tournament host Bowling Green moved up to third at 637 thanks to a 318 that was the best round of the day.

Karley Dobis led Ball State with a round of 4-over par 76 on Sunday. She climbed into a tie with teammate Meghan Perry for fourth place on the final individual leaderboard with a 36-hole total of 155 (+11).

“The wind was strong from the moment we stepped on range,” Ball State head coach Katherine Mowat said. “It was about as strong as it could be before becoming unplayable. Every shot was challenging, and it really put a lot of pressure on your short game. Karley’s round was excellent given the conditions, and fortunately our team hung on to win.”

The only player with a lower second-round score than Dobis was individual medalist Lily Bartel of Bowling Green. Bartel closed with a 75 to finish at 151 for the tournament. She beat Eastern Michigan’s Kelsey Murphy and South Dakota State’s Sydney MacDonald by one stroke.

Sarah Westaway tied for sixth place at 156 (+12) to give Ball State three players in the top 10. Westaway and Perry each carded rounds of 82 on Sunday.

The Cardinals also counted an 84 from Kelsey Sear on the final day, while Mary Welch posted an 87 to round out the lineup. Welch tied for 35th with a two-round score of 165, while Sear finished at 169.

Brenna Obergfell, competing as an individual, matched Welch in 35th place after posting the second-best round by any Ball State golfer Sunday with an 80 to finish at 165. Meghan McDougall also competed as an individual and finished at 171 after a closing 89.

Dobis and Obergfell, both sophomores, each had the best finishes of their careers, while Perry had her best result of the season and fellow senior Westaway matched hers.

The tournament victory was the first of the season for Ball State, which finished second in two events earlier this year. The win was the 14th for the Cardinals under Mowat, who guided last year’s team to four titles.

This weekend was the Cardinals’ final tuneup for the Mid-American Conference Championships, which Ball State will host April 25-27 at The Hawthorns in Fishers, Ind.
