RIO VERDE, Ariz. -- Behind Friday’s career-best round of 73 from sophomore Karley Dobis, the Ball State women’s golf team sits in fourth place after 18 holes at the Rio Verde Invitational.

The Cardinals posted a team score of 303 to trail tournament leader Montana (298) by five strokes. Wichita State (299) and Eastern Michigan (301) are second and third, and 10 of the 18 teams are within 10 shots of the lead.

Ball State is second among the eight Mid-American Conference teams in the field this week at Rio Verde Country Club’s Quail Run course.

Dobis is tied for fifth place individually after her 2-over par 73. She made three birdies, all on the front nine, and will enter the second round two shots off the lead held by Sydney Brickey of Northern Illinois.

Jenna Hague is one shot behind Dobis in a tie for 12th after a 74. She got off to a tough start, playing her first eight holes in 5 over par, but regrouped with three birdies in her next eight holes to steady the round.

Ball State also counted a 77 from Mary Welch and a 79 from Sarah Westaway on Friday. Welch is tied for 28th to give the Cardinals three players among the top 30 in the field of 96 players.

Meghan Perry finished the day with an 81, while Meghan McDougall, competing as an individual, shot an 88.
