Cardinals Among Eight MAC Teams in Rio Verde Field
The Ball State women’s golf team returns to action this week in Arizona at the 12th annual Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan.
The 54-hole tournament will be played over three days on the Quail Run course at Rio Verde Country Club. The action starts Friday with live scoring available at golfstat.com.
Akron, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Ohio, Northern Illinois and Toledo are also in the 18-team field, making for a total of eight Mid-American Conference teams.
The rest of the field includes Bradley, Illinois State, Missouri State, Montana, Northern Arizona, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UALR, UMKC, Wichita State and Xavier. Illinois State is the only new team to this year’s field; the other 17 all played last year.
Northern Arizona returns as the defending champion, having won last year’s tournament on Rio Verde’s White Wing course.
Ball State is the third-highest ranked team in this year’s field at No. 107 in the Golfstat rankings. Toledo is No. 79 and Xavier is No. 90.
The Cardinals are looking to build on a sixth-place finish at the Jim West Challenge three weeks ago in Texas. Jenna Hague tied for second at the tournament and enters the Rio Verde event 33rd nationally in the Golfstat Cup standings for adjusted scoring average.
The Quail Run course will play to a par-71, 6,209-yard layout this week. Friday’s opening round begins with a 1 p.m. MT (3 p.m. ET) shotgun start. Rounds two and three will begin Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m. MT (10 a.m. ET).Coaches and golfers of every will be posting pictures and videos throughout the week on Instagram.
