Men's Tennis Hosts EIU and Indiana Tech Saturday
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team is set to host a doubleheader Saturday against Eastern Illinois and Indiana Tech. The Cardinals will face the Panthers at 1 p.m. and then play a night match against Indiana Tech at 6:30 p.m. at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
The Cardinals opened spring action with two straight victories over Detroit Mercy (Jan. 18) and IPFW (Jan. 19). Ball State then suffered a loss to Cleveland State (Jan. 26) and No. 48 Michigan State (Feb. 1).
Ball State has won four straight over Eastern Illinois since the 2009-10 season. The Cardinals earned 7-0 sweeps over the Panthers and the Warriors last season. Eastern Illinois comes to Ball State with a 1-1 overall record after a 4-3 win over Saint Louis (Jan. 25) and a 7-0 loss to .Michigan State (Feb. 1). Indiana Tech's match against Ball State Saturday will be the first dual competition for the Warriors.
This season the Intercollegiate Tennis Association has put trial rules in place to shorten the matches in hopes to bring more attention to the sport and for collegiate tennis. The first change affects the doubles matches. Previously, all doubles matches were eight-game prosets and now they are six-game prosets with a 5-5 tiebreaker.
After the match Saturday, the Ball State men's tennis team will return to action Feb. 19 for a 1 p.m. match at Xavier.
