MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team (10-11, 1-2 MAC) hosts IUPUI (4-16) Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Cardinals will then close out the week with their last Mid-American Conference regular season match versus Buffalo (11-5, 1-1 MAC) with first serve at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting. If moved indoors, they will be played at the YMCA Tennis Center.
Ball State's matches against IUPUI and Buffalo will begin with three doubles matches and finish with six singles matches. The Cardinals are coming off of a 4-3 win over MAC rival Western Michigan Sunday, while the Jaguars recently fell to South Dakota 4-3. The Bulls also enter the week with a recent MAC win under their belt after also beating Western Michigan 4-3, April 6.
The Cardinals began league play as the defending MAC regular season champions, earning the right to host the 2014 MAC Tournament, April 25-26.
On Sunday, Ball State will also pay tribute to its lone senior Austin Smith. Smith has been a four- year letter winner for the Cardinals. He has played in a total of 116 career matches and owns a 70-46 overall record. As a junior, Smith earned Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention while posting the best overall singles mark on the team with a 28-8 ledger, including a 17-5 dual mark and was the lone Cardinal to go undefeated in MAC play with a 5-0 record. Smith was a member of the 2011 MAC Tournament Championship team that competed in the programs seventh NCAA Tournament at Ohio State. He also helped Ball State earn the 2013 MAC regular season title earning the right to host the 2014 MAC Tournament in Muncie. Smith is a two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic recipient. He was named the MAC Player of the Week, March 12, 2014.
