MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team went 1-1 in its double header Saturday losing a close 4-3 match to Illinois State in its opener and then finished the night with a 7-0 win over Anderson University in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
With the losses, the Cardinals drop to 5-6 overall while the Redbirds improve their dual match mark to 5-3 on the year and Anderson drops to 0-1.
The Cardinals started both matches today winning the doubles point. Against Illinois State, the twosome of Ray Leonard and Austin Smith took down Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrella 8-7 (2) on court one. Patrik Elliott and Andrew Stutz then won at No. 2 doubles after posting an 8-2 victory over Illinois State's Jacob Wilson and Urh Domiter Krajnc. The Cardinals swept all three doubles matches from Anderson in the night cap.
In singles action, Elliott defeated Illinois State's Wilson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 on court one. The Redbirds would then win on courts two, three, five and six for the 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. Lucas Andersen also earned a singles point for the Cardinals winning in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 over Krajnc at the No. 4 position. Ball State would close singles action against Anderson taking all six matches from the Ravens.
The Ball State men's tennis team begins a four-match road trip where the Cardinals will first face Vanderbilt (March 7) and Lipscomb (March 8) in Nashville, Tenn., before making their way west to Las Vegas, Nevada to take on North Dakota (March 14) and UNLV (March 15).
