Men's Tennis Suffers 4-0 Loss At No. 10 Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Despite suffering a 4-0 loss to No. 10 Notre Dame Saturday night, the Cardinals and

the Irish participated in the 2014 College Match Day series which was streamed live on ESPN3 for the first time in program history.

Today's competition was part of a trial format where the teams played singles first: Six best-of-three set singles matches (worth one point per match) to start each match. Four points was required to win the team match.  Doubles would only be played in case of a tie.

Andrew Stutz was the first to come off the court for the Cardinals losing his match at No. 5 singles to Wyatt McCoy, 6-0, 6-3.  Patick Downs then fell to Alex Lawson on court six, 6-0, 6-1.  After that, Ray Leonard would take a loss at the No. 1 position and then Austin Smith would drop his match at the No. 3 spot.  Before the match had been won by the Irish, Lucas Andersen was putting up a good fight for the Cardinals with a 7-6, 5-5 score on court four against Notre Dame's Eric Schnurrenberger.

Last year the USTA announced its new "College MatchDay" series. The series highlights several of the top men’s and women’s college tennis team matches each season, featuring organized activities and local events at each host team’s campus.  Twenty-two matches on 18 different campuses will be showcased this season, 11 of which were chosen to be delivered by ESPN3.

The Ball State men's tennis team returns home Friday, Feb. 28 when it hosts Dartmouth at 3 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
