MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team travels to Xavier Wednesday at 1 p.m. and Notre Dame Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. At Notre Dame the Cardinals will participate in the 2014 College Match Day series which will be streamed live on ESPN3.

"Xavier has a very strong team this year as they return six of their top seven players from last year and have added two freshmen that play consistently in their lineup," said Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards. "We won a close 4-3 match at home last year so we know we have a big challenge. I look forward to seeing how we respond."

Ball State enters the week with a 4-2 overall record while Xavier owns a 5-5 ledger.  Notre Dame has since moved up to No. 10 in the nation this week with the 4-0 victory over Florida on Sunday.

"The Notre Dame match is certainly very unique and exciting," said Richards. "It is one of ten college match day matches this winter and spring that will be televised by ESPN. These matches are sponsored by The United States Tennis association as they use their resources to show case college tennis.  The format we are playing will be experimental, so this will add to the excitement as well as shortening the length of the match."

Last year the USTA announced its new "College MatchDay" series. The series will highlight several of the top men’s and women’s college tennis team matches each season, featuring organized activities and local events at each host team’s campus.  Twenty-two matches on 18 different campuses will be showcased this season, 11 of which were chosen to be delivered by ESPN3.

The match at Notre Dame will use a trial format where the teams will play singles first: Six best-of-three set singles matches (worth one point per match) will start each match. Four points are required to win the team match.  Doubles will only be played in case of a tie.  Three doubles matches will be played with 10-point super tie-breakers, to create a college tennis' version of "overtime"  The team that wins two or more of the three doubles matches wins the doubles point.  After a team has clinched four points the remaining matches shall not be completed.
