Men's Tennis Completes Day One of Ball State Invite
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team ended its first day of competition at the 35th annual Ball State Invitational Friday evening at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
Two Cardinals advanced in their singles Flight A bracket. Juniors Patrick Elliott and Ray Leonard will all compete in the quarterfinals Saturday morning. Eliott won his first match in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to Illinois State's Jakub Eisner and then won in a three to Marquette's Cam Tehrani. Leonard earned a bye in the Round of 32 and then defeated Illinois State's Rodrigo Oliveira in three.
In Flight B, freshmen Andrew Stutz Patrick Downs and Matt Helm all advanced to the quarterfinals. Stutz drew a first-round bye and then downed IPFW's Martin Muadi in three. Downs also earned a bye in the round of 32 before defeating Illinois State's Dylan Steffens in straight sets (6-3, 6-1). Helm downed Chicago State's Julian Chavez in three before taking down IUPUI's Jacob Bradley in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
Elliott and Leonard drew a first-round bye in the doubles Flight A bracket and took a 8-2 victory over Marquette's Logon Collins and Kris Trukov. Freshman Lucas Andersen and senior Austin Smith fell in the quarterfinal 8-5 to IUPUI's Manual Laboy and Akshay Verma.
The Ball State men's tennis team will continue action at the 35th annual fall invitational Saturday at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
