Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing at ITA Event
MUNCIE, Ind. - Sophomore Patrick Elliott and senior Cliff Morrison of the Ball State men's tennis team, competed at the ITA Summer Circuit National Championships in Bloomington on the campus of Indiana University (Aug. 11-14), advancing to the final round of doubles.
"This was a great performance by Cliff and Patrick," said Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards. "They beat some outstanding players from outstanding programs to make it to the finals. All in all it was a solid effort by the five team members that played in this event. Hopefully this will give us a little momentum for our fall season."
Both Elliott and Morrison advanced to the finals in doubles where they were defeated 8-5 by the No. 1 seeded team from Tennessee, Hunter Reese and John Collins.
The Ball State duo managed upsets over the No. 5 seed from Indiana with a 9-7 victory while also earning an 8-3 win over the No. 3 seed from Texas A&M. The Cardinals twosome managed to take down No. 2 seed TCU, 9-7.
Because of their performance, Elliott and Morrison have now earned spots in the ITA All-American qualifying tournament in Tulsa, Okla. in October.
Other Cardinals that had success at the tournament were senior Dalton Albertin and sophomore Ray Leonard as they advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles competition. Albertin advanced to the round of 16 in singles action. Both Albertin and Elliott pulled of singles victories over highly ranked Louisville players, Chris Simich and Michael Lippens, respectively.
