FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Incoming Ball State freshman Michael VanDeventer shared medalist honors at this week's Indiana boys' golf state championships. All three members of the Cardinals' incoming class finished among the top 25 at the Legends Golf Club.

VanDeventer carded a two-round total of 3-under par 141 (70-71) to tie for first place with his Columbus North teammate Christian Fairbanks. The pair became the first teammates in the event’s history to share medalist honors, leading Columbus North to an 11-stroke victory over second-place Westfield on the team leaderboard.

VanDeventer was also presented with the Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award by the Indiana High School Athletic Association, recognizing excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

Fellow incoming Ball State freshman Michael Makris finished fourth at 1-under par 143 (75-68). Makris advanced to the state finals as an individual from Mishawaka Marian High School. His final-round 68 was the best of any player in the field and allowed him to climb 13 spots up the leaderboard.

Johnny Watts, the third member of Ball State's 2014 signing class, tied for 23rd at 8-over par 152 (72-80). He helped his Hamilton Southeastern team to a third-place finish.

All three players were also named to the all-state team with VanDeventer earning the recognition for the fourth straight year and Makris for the second in a row.
