MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State men’s golfer Tyler Merkel has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week.
The senior from Evansville, Ind., owns a 3.872 GPA as a business administration major. He posted a perfect 3-0 individual record to help Ball State to the team title at last week’s Mid-American Match Play in Dade City, Fla.
Merkel was also named the MAC Golfer of the Week for his performance at the match play event. He played bogey free in two of his three rounds on the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club, and none of his matches reached the final hole.
A two-time Academic All-MAC selection, Merkel earned Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar recognition last season. He is now a three-time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week award winner.
Merkel and the Cardinals won the Mid-American Match Play for the second time in the three years of the event. They will return to action March 16-17 when they head back to the Sunshine State to host The Talis Park Challenge in Naples, Fla.
Ball State has now had a MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week recipient seven times in 2013-14. Keith Wenning (football) and Drew Tharp (swimming) each won the award twice on the men’s side, while Jenna Hague (women’s golf) won it twice on the women’s side.
