MILTON, Ga. -- Ball State men’s golfer Tyler Merkel has been named to the PING All-Midwest Region Team for the second year in a row.
Merkel is with his teammates outside Atlanta this week as the Cardinals compete in the NCAA Championships at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course.
The junior from Evansville, Ind., was a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection this year. He has finished in the top 5 individually at six tournaments, including a victory at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate for his third career title. He was runner-up at the Firestone Invitational and finished fourth at the MAC Championships.
Merkel’s 72.83 stroke average this year ranks fourth in program history, while his 73.47 average over his first three years is on pace for the Ball State career record.
He helped Ball State to a tie for fifth place at the NCAA Pullman Regional, followed by a playoff victory that allowed the Cardinals to advance to this week’s NCAA Nationals for the first time since 1986.
Merkel is one of 155 golfers from across six regions to earn the recognition. His selection marks the third straight year Ball State has placed a golfer on the all-region team with former Cardinal Eric Steger having earned the honor in 2011.
