ATLANTA -- The Ball State men’s golf team, two days away from its opening round at the NCAA Championships, practiced Sunday at the Atlanta Country Club.

The team landed in the Peach State in the late morning and headed to the course, where former Ball State golfer Scott Schroeder is the head professional.

The Cardinals spent the afternoon playing the beautiful 7,100-yard layout that is consistently ranked among the top 100 in the country. For many years it hosted the PGA Tour’s BellSouth Classic. Another former Cardinal, Brian Tennyson, played at the event -- then known as the Atlanta Classic -- in 1986.

Ball State will get its first look at the NCAA Championships site Monday with its practice round at the Capital City Club and its Crabapple Course. All 30 teams will play their practice rounds Monday in preparation for the 75th championships.

The tournament opens Tuesday morning with Ball State’s tee times scheduled for 8:40-9:20 a.m. The event features 54 holes of stroke play over three days, followed by a cut to the top eight teams for match play to decide the national champion.

The Cardinals will utilize the same lineup that got them through the regionals just more than a week ago: Tyler Merkel, Alex Stinson, McCormick Clouser, Tony Lazzara and Joe Gasser.
