Men's Golf Set to Host Match Play Event in Florida
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team ventures to Dade City, Fla., to host the Mid-American Match Play on Monday and Tuesday at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
Eight Mid-American Conference programs will be competing in the second annual event on Lake Jovita's South Course, which will play to a par-72, 7,153-yard layout. Live scoring will be available at ballstatesports.com.
The teams in the field are seeded based on Golfweek rankings, and Ball State is the top seed in the field. The Cardinals, which have been ranked as high as 27th in the country, will meet No. 8 seed Ohio in their opening match.
The other first-round matches include: No. 2 seed Akron versus No. 7 seed Northern Illinois, No. 3 seed Toledo versus No. 6 seed Bowling Green and No. 4 seed Eastern Michigan versus No. 5 seed Miami University.
All teams are guaranteed three matches over the two days. The first two rounds are slated for Monday, while the championship match along with matches for third, fifth and seventh places will be played Tuesday. The action will begin both days with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Each team match will be composed of six individual matches. Ball State's lineup for the event features Tyler Merkel at No. 1, Joe Gasser at No. 2, Alex Stinson at No. 3, Brodie Williams at No. 4, McCormick Clouser at No. 5 and Tony Lazzara at No. 6.
Merkel, a junior, led the Cardinals with a 72.43 stroke average in a fall season that included a team title for Ball State at the Firestone Invitational and a second-place team finish at the Pinetree Intercollegiate.
Clouser, a sophomore mid-year transfer from Michigan State, will be competing for Ball State for the first time and joins a veteran lineup that includes four seniors.
This is the second year Ball State is hosting the Mid-American Match Play. The Cardinals won last year's event, defeating Eastern Michigan in the championship match.
