Men's Golf Wins Mid-American Match Play

Ball State's men's golf team won the Mid-American Match Play at Lake Jovita South Course in Florida with a 3.5 to 2.5 victory in the title match over Eastern Michigan.

The Cardinals entered the event as the No. 1 seed based on its fall results and defeated No. 8 seed Ohio in the opening round.  Ball State defeated fourth-seeded Northern Illinois in the semifinals before posting the championship win over the Eagles.

Tyler Merkel led the Cardinals with a 3-0 record in the event.  

Brodie Williams posted a 2-0-1 mark in his three matches after halving his final match to clinch the victory for the Cardinals.

Joe Gasser and Tony Lazzara tallied 2-1 marks.  Alex Stinson was 1-1-1 in the event, while TJ Carpenter was 1-2. 

TOURNAMENT NOTE:  Nick Schiavi (Northern Illinois) hits a hole-in-one on No. 14, a 146-yard, par-3 hole.

Ball State's men's golf team is hosting the Mid-American Match Play Tournament at Lake Jovita South Course in Dade City, Fla., Monday and Tuesday.

The event is the spring season opener for the Cardinals, who are the No. 1 seed in the tournament which includes eight Mid-American Conference schools.  Joining Ball State at the match play event are Akron, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami University, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Toledo.

The Cardinals, under the direction of 14th-year head coach Mike Fleck, earned the No. 1 seed by virtue of its fall season rankings.

Ball State's top golfer this fall was Tyler Merkel, who led the team with a 72.27 average in five events.  Merkel, who was named the MAC Co-Freshman of the Year last season, tied his career low with a 68 at the Northern Intercollegiate Sept. 11.

TJ Carpenter tallied a 72.73 average in the fall and will play No. 2 for the Cardinals at the match play event.  Alex Stinson, Joe Gasser, Tony Lazzara and Brodie Williams will round out the lineup for Ball State.
