Tyler Merkel, a sophomore member of the Ball State men's golf team, tied for 49th at the NCAA Men's Golf Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Merkel managed a 73-76-74=223, a total score of 10 over par in the three round event.
The top five teams in the 13-team field and the top individual not competing on an advancing team qualified for the NCAA Championships May 27-29 at The Riviera Country Club in Palisades, Calif. Southern California won the team event with an 841, while Oregon, Kent State, Virginia and Texas Christian all advanced. Albin Choi of North Carolina State won the event and advanced as an individual after firing a 69-66-68=203.
Merkel marked the second straight year a Ball State individual advanced to the NCAA Regional, under the direction of 14-year head coach Mike Fleck. Eric Steger advanced in 2011 and also tied for 49th in the event.
