Merkel graduated with the second-best career stroke average in Ball State history at 73.99, trailing only Jamie Broce (1995-99) at 73.57 ... He competed in the NCAA Championships twice, earning a Regional invitation as an individual in 2012 and helping Ball State to the Nationals in 2013.

2013-14 (Sr.): Ball State's male recipient of the inaugural Mid-American Conference Medal of Excellence ... an Academic All-MAC selection ... managed a 75.65 scoring average in 10 stroke-play events … posted four top-20 finishes and one top-10 ... tied for fifth place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 15-17) with a score of 3-under par 213 … carded a season-low round of 69 on day one at the Golfweek event … won all three of his matches at the Mid-American Match Play (Feb. 10-11) to lead Ball State to the team title ... named the MAC Golfer of the Week and MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week after that performance ... tied for 16th at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational (Sept. 29-30) ... tied for 17th ath the MAC Championships (May 2-4) ... tied for 19th at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 6-8).

2012-13 (Jr.): A first-team All-MAC selection and Academic All-MAC honoree ... led the team with a 72.91 stroke average, the fourth-best single-season average in program history ... managed seven top-10 finishes and six top-5 results in 11 stroke play events ... twice named the MAC Golfer of the Week -- March 18 after winning the Pinehurst Intercollegiate and Oct. 10 after finishing second at the Firestone Invitational ... posted a 2-over par total of 214 at Pinehurst (March 10-12) on the way to his third career victory ... matched the lowest round of his career with a 68 at the weather-shortened Firestone event (Oct. 8-9) on his way to a 36-hole total of 4-under 140 for second place ... tied for third at the Pinetree Intercollegiate (Oct. 22-23) at 3-over par 219 ... placed fourth at the MAC Championships (May 3-5) at 3-over 291 and was named to the all-tournament team ... tied for fourth at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 16-18) with a 54-hole score of 3-under par 213 ... tied for fifth at Ball State's Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational (Oct. 15-16) at 3-over 213 ... finished sixth at the Jim West Intercollegiate (April 8-9) ... posted a 1-1-1 record in the Mid-American Match Play (Feb. 11-12) ... tied for 30th at the NCAA Pullman Regional at 1-under par ... helped Ball State to its first NCAA Regional berth as a team since 1991 and its first NCAA Championships appearance since 1986.

2011-12 (So.):  An NCAA Regional participant as an individual ... earned All-MAC First Team and Academic All-MAC honors ... managed four top-10 finishes . . . led the Cardinals with a 73.47 scoring average . . . three-time Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week . . . tied for first at the Northern Intercollegiate and was named the MAC Golfer of the Week . . . posted a 3-0 record at the Mid-American Match Play and was named MAC Golfer of the Week . . . tied for second at the Golf Pride Pinehurst Intercollegiate and was named the MAC Golfer of the Week . . . tied for fourth at the Golfweek Conference Challenge . . . tied for seventh at Ball State's Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational . . . tied his career low with a 68 at the Northern Intercollegiate . . . tallied a season low 54-hole score of 212 at the Northern Intercollegiate . . . named the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Sept. 19, 2011 . . . tied for 28th at the MAC Championships.

2010-11 (Fr.):  Named second-team All-MAC and MAC Co-Freshman of the Year ... managed a career-best 54-hole total of 209 (71-68-70) for his first career collegiate victory at the adidas Hoosier Invitational . . . named the Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week for his performance at the Hoosier Invitational . . . tallied a career-low 68 in the second round of the adidas Hoosier Invitational . . . also scored a 69 at the Cardinal Intercollegiate . . . followed his first-place finish with a second-place showing at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational . . . four top-20 finishes -- first at adidas Hoosier Invitational, second at EY, and tied for 12th at the Cardinal Intercollegiate and the Bearcat Invitational . . . posted a 2-3-2 record in match play competition . . . named the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week after his performance at the Yestingsmeier Invitational.
