OXFORD, Ohio - The Ball State women's basketball team earned an 80-70 road victory over Miami Thursday afternoon in Mid-American Conference action. With the win the Cardinals improved to 11-13 overall and 6-7 in the MAC while the RedHawks fall to 7-17 for the season and 3-10 in league action.
Four players scored in double figures for the Cardinals with Brandy Woody leading all scorers with 19 points plus added four assists and five rebounds. Shelbie Justice tallied 17 points off of four three-point baskets. Katie Murphy contributed 15 points and led the Cardinals defensively with nine rebounds while Nathalie Fontaine ended the day with 14 points.
Ball State out-rebounded Miami 44-to-25 which included 18 offensive boards and 26 defensive rebounds. The Cardinals scored 23 points off of second chance points.
Miami opened the second half with a 16-9 run over a five minute stretch to take a 48-43 lead over Ball State with 14:49 on the clock. The Cardinals then orchestrated a 21-7 run given Ball State a five-point (64-55) advantage over the ReHawks with 6:35 remaining in the game. Miami came to within four (64-60) in the last five minutes of play but a three pointer from Woody put Ball State back up by seven. The Cardinals would control the game the remainder of the half hitting their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Fontaine scored the first basket of the game to give Ball State the early 2-0 advantage over Miami. The RedHawks would answer with a quick basket at the opposite end of the court to tie the game 2-2. After that, the Cardinals put together a 21-13 run over the next 10 minutes to take their largest lead of the first half, 23-15, off of a three point basket from Jill Morrison.
Miami responded with an 8-0 run to knot the game 26-26 with 8:20 remaining. Both teams continued to trade baskets the remainder of the half. Ball State held onto a one-point (33-32) advantage up until Morrison knocked down her second three pointer of the contest as time expired to put the Cardinals up 36-32 over the RedHawks at intermission.
The Ball State women’s basketball team continues Mid-American Conference action at home Sunday against Eastern Michigan in Worthen Arena with a 2 p.m. tipoff. The game will be televised on the Ball State Sports network.
