Women's Basketball Selected for Postseason WNIT
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team received an invitation to compete in the 2013 Postseason Women's National Invitational Tournament that consists of 64 teams. The Cardinals will play at Minnesota Friday, March 22 with an 8 p.m. tipoff.
Ball State advanced straight to the semifinals as the No. 2 seed in last week's 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio but lost to No. 3 Akron 70-61. This is the fourth time that BSU has played in the WNIT and the first appearance since the 2007 tournament.
"I am so excited for our players and their success this year," said Ball State women's basketball coach Brady Sallee. "For the turnaround they had to be recognized with an invitation to the WNIT is truly amazing. We are honored to be playing in the post-season and look forward to enjoying every second of it! This undoubtedly is a huge step for our program."
Sallee, who is in his first season along with his staff, has done an incredible job of turning around the Cardinals that posted a 9-21 overall record and a 4-12 league mark last season. This season, Ball State owns a 15-15 ledger and 12-4 league record entering the 2013 WNIT.
Sallee, named the 11th coach in school history at Ball State in May, is the second coach to guide the Cardinals to a postseason berth in their first year with the Cardinals.
The Postseason WNIT features 64 Division I women's basketball teams. The field includes 31 teams that receive automatic berths - one berth from each of the nation's established conferences - and 33 at-large selections. All teams at the Division I level are considered for at-large berths, including those who are independent and/or are in the process of reaching full NCAA Division I status.
