WBB Suffers 64-52 MAC Road Loss At Akron
AKRON, Ohio - The Ball State women's basketball team (11-13, 8-3 MAC) suffered a 64-52 Mid-American Conference road loss to Akron (17-7, 8-3 MAC) Saturday evening in Rhodes Arena.
For the game freshman guard Nathalie Fontaine led the Cardinals with a double-double after scoring 14 points while adding 11 rebounds. Junior guard Brandy Woody had 12 points. Sophomore guard Shelbie Justice and junior guard Lyzz Smith each added seven points for the game. As a team the Cardinals out-rebounded the Zips 48-to-36.
Akron came out of the gates strong and continued to control the game eventually building a 13-point (53-40) cushion at the 6:49 mark. Ball State tried to comeback but couldn't overcome the Zips second-half surge.
After winning the tip, the Cardinals started the game off with a 7-0 run after two layups from junior forward Katie Murphy along with a basket from Justice and one from Woody. The Ball State defense held Akron scoreless up until the 13:56 mark. The Zips then tied the game 7-7 with 12:44 remaining.
Both teams would go back and forth until Akron went on an 11-8 run which allowed the Zips to take the 23-20 halftime advantage over the Cardinals. At the half, Ball State had out-rebounded Akron 29-to-20 while the score was tied twice with three lead changes.
The Ball State women's basketball team begins a two-game Mid-American Conference home stand Wednesday when the Cardinals host Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
