WBB Improves to 6-1 in the MAC With Win at WMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Ball State women's basketball team expanded its win streak to four with its 73-50 victory at Western Michigan Thursday night in University Arena.  With the win the Cardinals improve to 9-11 overall and 6-1 in the Mid-American Conference while the Broncos fall to 6-14 overall and 2-5 in league action.

Both sophomore guard Shelbie Justice and freshman guard Nathalie Fontaine had career-high performances after leading the Cardinals with 20 points apiece.  Sophomore guard Brittany Carter chipped in 10 points on the night.  Defensively Fontaine led Ball State with seven rebounds.

For the game Ball State shot 49.1 percent while holding its opponent to 29.3 percent.  The Cardinals scored 34 points in the paint and 24 points off of the Broncos 18 turnovers.

The Cardinals defense started off quickly holding the Broncos to only one field goal and a free throw for over nine minutes which allowed Ball State to build a 15-4 lead with 10:54 on the clock. 

Western Michigan got back to within five (19-14) with 7:13 left in the half, but Ball State answered quickly with a 7-0 run to go back up 26-14 at the 5:21 mark. After that, Justice closed with 11 straight points for Ball State including a layup at the buzzer which gave the Cardinals the 39-21 halftime advantage over the Broncos.

Ball State built its largest lead of the game in the second half which was 26 (55-29) with just over ten minutes left in the contest.  Western Michigan began to close the gap slowly but could only come within 18 (41-59) with 7:30 remaining.  

The Ball State women's basketball team continues Mid-American Conference action on the road when it travels to Eastern Michigan Sunday for a 2 p.m. tipoff in the Convocation Center.
