WBB Suffers 69-67 Setback Against Northern Kentucky

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (3-7) suffered a 69-67 loss to Northern Kentucky (2-5) Saturday evening in Worthen Arena.

For the game senior guard Shanee' Jackson tied her career high with an 18 point performance.  Freshman forward Nathalie Fontaine had 15 points while sophomore guard Brittany Carter ended the night with 13 and junior guard Brandy Woody chipped in 10.

Northern Kentucky would lead by as many as 14 points (52-38) in the second half, but the Cardinals would continue to fight their way back and eventually go on a 22-9 run to close the Norse gap to 61-60 with just under five minutes left in the contest. 

NKU went back up by four (64-60) but Ball State answered on its next possession with a three pointer from Brittany Carter to make it 64-63 at the 3:11 mark.  The game would then come down to the last 25 seconds.  After the Norse went back up by four, Ball State cut it to 69-67 on a layup from Shanee' Jackson.

With 29 seconds left in the game and down by two, the Cardinals fouled Northern Kentucky.  A missed free throw was rebounded by freshman guard Taylor Miller and Ball State called time with 26 seconds left to play.  Ball State missed its field goal attempt and fouled NKU again with 14 seconds to play.

Another missed free throw by the Norse and another rebound by the Cardinals set up the final seconds of the game, but Ball State could not connect on its final shot of the contest.  

For the second straight game Carter opened the game with a three pointer to give Ball State the early 3-0 lead over Northern Kentucky. 

Both schools' went on a two minute scoring drought before the Norse finally scored at the 15:32 mark, which sparked a 12-4 run to go up 15-7 with 10 minutes left in the first half.

Ball State answered back with a 13-5 run after scoring four treys from Carter, Brandi Woody and Miller to knot the game, 23-23, with just under five minutes to play. Both squads traded baskets the remainder of the first half, but the Cardinals trailed 31-27 at halftime.

The Ball State women's basketball team will play on the road at Illinois State Sunday, Dec. 16 with a 2:05 (EST) tipoff in Redbird Arena.
