WBB Suffers 78-66 Road Loss at Stetson

DELAND, Fla. - The Ball State women's basketball team (2-4) suffered a 78-66 loss at Stetson (3-3) Sunday afternoon in the Edmunds Center.

For the first time this season Ball State had five players score in double figures with junior guard Brandy Woody leading the way with 14 points.  Junior forward Katie Murphy along with sophomore guard Brittany Carter each scored 12 points respectively.  Freshman forward Nathalie Fontaine added 11 and sophomore Shelbie Justice ended the day with 10 points.  Fontaine led the team defensively with nine rebounds.

Carter opened the second half with a trey that sparked a 5-0 run by the Cardinals to make it a36-33 ball game with not even two minutes shaved off the clock.  After that Stetson went on an 8-2 run to go up by nine (44-35) at the 17:34 mark.  The Hatters continued its hot shooting hand the remainder of the contest, eventually building a 16-point (58-42) cushion over Ball State with 12:43 left in the half.

The Cardinals would bring themselves within seven (62-55) at the 6:57 mark after orchestrating a 12-0 run to put them within reach of the Hatters after help from Justice, Fontaine, senior guard Shanee' Jackson and Murphy.  But Stetsons school record of 14 made three pointers helped them secure the victory.

 The game started off with one tie and one lead change before Stetson went on a 26-15 run to build its largest lead at the half 29-20 at the 5:09 mark.  The Cardinals then went on a 6-0 run after back-to-back baskets from junior forward Katie Murphy and two free throws from sophomore guard Brittany Carter to close the Hatters gap to three (29-26) with 3:18 remaining in the first half.  Stetson ended the half with an 8-2 run to which gave them the 36-28 halftime advantage over Ball State. 

At the half Ball State outscored Stetson in the paint 14-to-8 while also shooting 43.5 percent from the field.

The Ball State women's basketball team continues its four game road swing as it travels to Murray State Thursday, Nov. 29 for a 7 p.m. tipoff.  The Cardinals will then close out the trip Saturday, Dec. 1 at Austin Peay at 5:15 p.m.
