Women's Basketball Opens Season With Exhibition Win

MUNCIE, Ind. - First year head coach Brady Sallee guided the Ball State women's basketball team to a 88-26 season opening exhibition win over Oakland City Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.

"I thought it was a good start for us as a team," said Sallee.  "We were able to make our defense turn into offense.  I definitely had butterflies coaching my first game in Worthen Arena but overall I saw a lot of positives tonight."

All of the Cardinals saw action with junior guard Brandy Woody leading the way with a double-double after a 16-point, 12 rebound performance.

Three other Cardinals also scored in double figures; newcomer forward Nathalie Fontaine had 15 points while teammate senior Shannee' Jackson chipped in 15 points and sophomore guard Shelbie justice ended the night with 12.  Jackson also pulled down 9 rebounds and Fontaine had eight.

For the game Ball State outshot Oakland City 46.8 to 17.4, while outrebounding the Lady Oaks 56-to-32.

The Cardinals started out of the gates fast with junior forward Katie Murphy scoring a layup off of the assist from Woody.  Ball State proceeded to score six straight baskets to go up 8-0 over the Lady Oaks.

Ball State continued its strong offense eventually building a 19-point cushion (32-13) with 7:00 minutes remaining in the first half and never looked back the remainder of the contest.

At the half, Ball State headed into the lockerroom up 49-16 over the Lady Oaks.  Woody led all scorers at halftime with 13 points.  The Cardinals defense held Oakland City to a 17.4 percent shooting from the field in the first period.

The Ball State women's basketball team will open its 2012-13 season at home Friday, Nov. 9, as its hosts in-state rival Evansville in Worthen Arena with a 7 p.m. tipoff.
