MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (9-20, 4-12 MAC) lost in its last Mid-American Conference regular season game to Toledo (20-8, 13-3 MAC) Tuesday night in Worthen Arena.
Senior forward and co-captain Suzanne Grossnickle led both teams in scoring with a career-high 20-points on the night. Freshman guard Brittany Carter chipped in 11 points while sophomore guard Brandy Woody added 10. Grossnickle also led the Cardinals defensively with nine rebounds.
Carter opened the second half with a three-pointer to make the score 34-31.
The Cardinals trailed by as many as nine (53-44) with under ten minutes to play but cut Toledo's lead to five (53-48) after Woody connected on a four-point play.
Toledo led the entire second half, Carter's three pointer with 2:59 left brought Ball State to within three points (58-55) but it wasn't enough as the Rockets would hit their free throws down the stretch to win the ball game.
After four lead changes and eight ties in the first half, Toledo managed to head into intermission up 34-28 over Ball State.
The Cardinals biggest lead of the half was five which occurred twice, once at the 16:22 mark by a score of 12-7 and then again with 13:24 to play.
The game was knotted 26-26 for the last time with 3:38 remaining but the Rockets put together an 8-2 run to end the half.
The Ball State women's basketball team will head to No. 5 Central Michigan for the first round of the MAC Tournament Saturday as the No. 12 seed, tipoff is TBA.
