WBB Pushes MAC Leader Toledo to Brink in 68-64 Loss

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (11-12, 8-2 MAC) lost a 68-64 heartbreaker to Mid-American Conference leader Toledo (21-2, 9-1 MAC) Sunday afternoon in Worthen Arena.

For the game, senior guard Shanee' Jackson led the Cardinals with 17 points and eight rebounds.  Brandy Woody chipped in 15 points, while Nathalie Fontaine ended the game with 14.

Ball State shot 38.1 percent from the field, while Toledo shot 37.7 percent.   The Rockets out-rebounded Ball State 47 to 37.

After Ball State trailed by 16 at the half, Shelbie Justice opened the second half for the Cardinals with back-to-back baskets to make it a 37-25 ball game at the 17:05 mark.

The Rockets still led by as many as 15 (46-31) with 13:12 left to play.  Ball State then went on a 22-7 run which was sparked by a 3-pointer from Lyzz Smith.  Back-to-back 3-point baskets from Jackson tied the game 53-53 with 4:30 remaining.

Woody then gave Ball State its first lead with just under four minutes left in the contest at 57-55.   The game was knotted 59-59 at the 2:36 mark, but Toledo went on a 4-0 run to take a 63-59 edge with under a minute remaining.  The Rockets then made their free throws down the stretch to win the game.

Toledo came out of the gates strong in the opening minutes of the first half, rattling off 13 unanswered points by the 13:53 mark.

The Rockets built their lead to as many as 20 late in the first half and continued to lead by double digits through much of the second before the Ball State rally.

Naama Shafir led all scorers with 19 points for Toledo and was one of four Rockets to score in double figures, joining Andola Dortch with 13, Yolanda Richardson with 11 and Inma Zanoguera with 10.

The Ball State women's basketball team continues Mid-American Conference action at Akron Saturday with a 5 p.m. tipoff in Rhodes Arena.
