WBB Loses Close Game At Home To Wyoming

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University women's basketball team (3-9) lost a hard fought battle to Wyoming (9-2) Tuesday night in Worthen Arena by a score of 64-61.

For the game junior guard Katie Murphy led the Cardinals with 16 points while teammate sophomore guard Shelbie Justice chipped in a season high 15 point performance.  Sophomore guard Brittany Carter ended the night with 11 points.  Ball State outrebounded Wyoming 36-to-32.

The Cowgirls quickly built an eight point advantage (38-30) after opening the second half with a 14-1 run.  Ball State would fight its way back with a 7-1 run of its own to knot the contest at 42-42 with 9:48 left to play after baskets from Carter and freshman guard Nathalie Fontaine.

With 7:48 to play Wyoming had scored nine straight unanswered points to go ahead of the Cardinals by a score of 51-42.  Ball State would stay close to Wyoming, trailing by only five points (62-57) after Carter nailed a three pointer with 41 seconds on the clock.

After a missed Wyoming free throw senior guard Shanee' Jackson got the rebound allowing Woody to make a layup to come within three (62-59) of the Cowgirls.  A forced turnover by the Cardinals gave Woody another opportunity to hit a layup which made it a one point ball game (62-61) with 16 seconds to play.  Ball State was forced to foul the Cowgirls, Wyoming would make its free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Wyoming opened the contest with a three pointer but Ball State answered with back-to-back baskets from junior forward Katie Murphy along with a trey from teammate sophomore guard Shelbie Justice which gave the Cardinals the early 7-3 edge over the Cow Girls.

After trailing by four (15-11) at the 11:59 mark Ball State took its first lead since the 15:03 mark off of a three pointer from Justice which made it a 18-17 ball game.  Both teams continued to trade baskets the remainder of the half.  Murphy would hit a jump shot just under the two minute mark and senior guard Shanee' Jackson sealed the Cardinals 29-27 halftime advantage over Wyoming with a free throw.

The Ball State University women's basketball team will travel to Valparaiso Dec. 29 for its last non-conference game of the season with a 1:35 p.m. tipoff.
