YPSILANTI, Mich. - - Led by a school-record mile run from senior MaryKate Mellen, the Ball State indoor track & field team scored seven points on the final day of the 2013 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan.
Kent State won the 12-team event with a score of 175 points, while host EMU tallied 94 points to place second. Western Michigan was third with 73 points, followed by Akron (71), Toledo (65), Buffalo (51), Ohio (38), Miami (35.5), Central Michigan (25.5), Northern Illinois (16), Bowling Green (12) and Ball State (7).
Mellen finished the mile run in a career-fast time of 4:50.10 to collect six points for the Cardinals. The effort, which also broke the school record of 4:50.87 set by Laura Didion set in 1988, was the best career finish for Mellen in an event at the MAC Championships.
Also scoring on the day for the Cardinals was sophomore Haley Austin who placed eighth in the high jump by successfully clearing 1.67m/5-5.75.
The Ball State track & field team will now shift its attention to the outdoor season which it begins March 23 at the Polar Bear Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan Univeristy.
