CLEVELAND, Ohio - - Ball State junior distance runner Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) completed this year’s academic trifecta by being named to the 2014 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Team as announced Tuesday by the league office.

Edon was also named to the Academic All-MAC squads for cross country and indoor track & field during the 2013-14 athletic year. She is one of just eight MAC student-athletes to be named to all three Academic All-MAC teams this season.

“I am thrilled Courtney was once again recognized for both her academic and athletic accomplishments,” Ball State head coach Randy Heisler said. “She is a great role model for our team, and an excellent representative of what we are trying to achieve at Ball State University.”

Edon, a nursing major with a 3.865 grade-point average, competed in seven meets for the Cardinals during the 2014 outdoor campaign. She placed 11th at the MAC Championships in the 3000m steeplechase with a season-best effort of 11:13.47. The mark was the 15th-best individual effort in the league this season. Edon won the 3000m steeplechase at both the Ball State Invitational (April 11) and Hillsdale Classic (May 8), while placing second in the 5000m run at the RedHawk Invitational (April 26) with a season-best time of 18:01.58.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

A total of 40 student-athletes from the MAC’s 12 women’s outdoor track & field programs earned the honor this season, which is voted on by the league’s faculty athletics representatives. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is the number set for the specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
