T&F Scores Seven Event Wins In Season Opener
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track & field team started the 2013-14 season strong, posting seven event victories at the Gerry England Alumni Open Saturday night at the University of Indianapolis' Athletic Recreational Center.
In addition to the seven event victories, Ball State's high jumping duo of redshirt junior Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and junior Haley Austin (Avon, Ind./Avon) also posted Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship qualifying marks. Lomax won the high jump by successfully clearing 5'-7" (1.70m) in her hometown meet, while Austin placed second at 5'-6" (1.68m).
Overall, the Cardinals won four of the six field events, while capturing top honors in three of the six track events they entered at the non-scored event.
In the pole vault, junior Hannah Ciasto-Poor (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) took the top spot by clearing the bar at 11'-3.75" (3.45m), while freshman Elizabeth Eversole (Mishawaka, Ind./Marion) placed second at 10'-10" (3.30m).
In the long jump, redshirt sophomore Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) posted a career-best leap of 18'-5.25" (5.62m) to earn top billing.
Rounding out the field event winners was redshirt sophomore Marie Lumpkin (Losantville, Ind./Union) with a weight throw of 52'-11" (16.13m).
On the track, senior Hannah Lange (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) led a 1-2-3-4 effort in the 400m dash, posting an event-winning time of 1:00.15.
Lange would also run the final leg of the first-place 4x400m relay which posted a time of 4:08.86, with freshmen Makelle Skelton (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrup), Olivia Ashba (Ellettsville, Ind./Edgewood) and Ariel Hune (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) running the first three legs.
Ball State's final event victory came from sophomore Danielle Dahl (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) who took home top honors in the 800m run by crossing the finish line in 2:19.24.
The Ball State indoor track & field team now returns its attention to training for a little over a month, as the full team will not return to competition until the Jan. 11 Mel Brodt Invitational hosted by Bowling Green. Ball State's pole vaulters are slated to compete in the third day of the Pole Vault Convention hosted by Akron Jan. 3-5.
