MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track & field team will get a running start at the 2013-14 season Saturday, when it travels to the University of Indianapolis for the Gerry England Alumni Open. Action in the field events is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Athletic Recreational Center.

The first events slated for the day are the long and triple jumps. Action on the track gets underway at 4:30 p.m. with the 3000m run.

“I honestly think this was the best fall of training we have had since I have been at Ball State,” said head coach Randy Heisler. “I am looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish Saturday. We have a great group of freshman that our entire coaching staff is anxious to see. Keep in mind this is the first week of December, and while the meet still counts, it really is a test to see where we are as a team. We are looking forward to being a much better team than we have been the last few years."

Youth looks to be the key to the Cardinals’ success on the track, as only two of Ball State’s top performers from last year’s indoor campaign return for this season.

Senior Hannah Lange (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) paced the Cardinals in the 400m run last season, with a career-fast clocking of 58.12. In the 5,000m, sophomore Katelyn DeVries (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led the squad with a career-best effort of 17:30.74.

The Cardinals look to relay on a more veteran group in the field events, with all but one of the team’s top performers returning from last season.

In the high jump, junior Haley Austin (Avon, Ind./Avon) led the Cardinals by clearing a height of 5’-6” (1.68m). In addition, junior Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) returns to competition after redshirting last season. Lomax was the 2011 MAC Outdoor High Jump Champion and is a two-time NCAA East Preliminary Round qualifier in the event.

Sophomore Zenée Gadson (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) returns as Ball State’s top performer in both the long jump (16’-11.5”/5.17m) and the triple jump (37’-4.5”/11.39m), while junior Hannah Ciasto-Poor (Bloomington, Ind./ South) turned in the Cardinals’ top effort in the pole vault (11’-7.75”/3.55m) last season.

Rounding out Ball State’s top performers from 2012-13 are redshirt sophomore Marie Lumpkin (Losantville, Ind./Union) in the weight throw (54’-2.5”/16.52m) and sophomore Michaela Hull (Bloomington, Ind./South) in the shot put (45’-2.25”/13.77m).
