Lorenz Places 1st in Heptathlon at MAC Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Ball State track & field team improved since its 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships showing of 12th to 10th-place on the final day of the league meet Saturday, hosted by Central Michigan at Lyle Bennett Outdoor Track.

The Cardinals finished the three-day event with 22 points to place 10th among the 12-team field. Kent State won the meet with 134.33 points and was followed by Toledo (132), Western Michigan (108), Miami (82), Eastern Michigan (78.33), Buffalo (72), Akron (68.50), Northern Illinois (55.33), Central Michigan (48), BSU, Ohio (17.50) and Bowling Green (1).

Ball State's top event of the final day came in the high jump as Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) leaped to a height of 5-5.75 for fourth-place.

In other field events, Melissa Dodaro (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) posted an eighth-place toss in the discus (147-06), in addition to Alyssa Hurlburt (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) tallying a leap of 33-11.25 in the triple jump.

In the relay events, Lomax combined with Jordan McMillan (Portland, Ind./Jay County), Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) and Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) on the ninth-place 4x100m relay (49.16).

MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) returned in the finals of the 15000m run to add a phenomenal time of 4:38.02 for eighth place.

For her performance during the league meet, Lorenz earned All-MAC First Team honors.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Ball State Outdoor Track & Field tallied 15 points on the second day of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Track & Field Championships Friday at Central Michigan’s Lyle Bennett Outdoor Track.

After day two, Toledo is first with 59 points and is followed by Kent State (48), Miami (33), Akron (29), Eastern Michigan (22), Western Michigan (21), Buffalo (18), Central Michigan (16), BSU, Ohio (12), Bowling Green (T-0) and Northern Illinois (T-0).

The Cardinals jumped from 10th to ninth in the standings behind strong efforts from Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) in the pentathlon with a score of 5142 for first place. Lorenz returned Friday with a third-place leap in the long jump (18-8.00), a throw of (117-05) in the javelin and a time of 2:27.55 in the 800m run.

Also competing in the heptathlon, Lindsay Wallace (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) added top performances in the long jump (15-0.75), javelin (60-08) and 800m run (2:34.99).

Lorenz returned in the long jump after leaping to 18-11.25 for fourth-place, in addition to Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) adding a top effort of 17-2.25.

In the sprint events, Janae Taylor (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) posted top-20 efforts in the 100m dash preliminaries (11.97) and 200m dash preliminaries (25.13), while Christine Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) clocked in at 2:11.93 in the 800m run preliminaries.

In the 1500m run preliminaries, MaryKate Mellen (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) posted a ninth-place finish with a qualifying time of 4:33.39.

Ball State also picked up phenomenal performances in the 3000m steeplechase from Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) in ninth-place (11:28.56) and Caitlynn Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) in 14th-place (12:01.04).

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Ball State outdoor track & field team finished the opening day of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships tied for tenth among 12 teams. The three-day meet is hosted by Central Michigan at Lyle Bennett Outdoor Track.

The Cardinals are tied for 10th with Bowling Green and Northern Illinois. Kent State is first with 22 points and is followed by Toledo (22), Akron (16), Central Michigan (14), Eastern Michigan (11), Buffalo (10), Miami (9), Western Michigan (8), Ohio (18), Central Michigan (16), BSU and Ohio (12).

Thekla Lorenz (Hamburg, Germany) paced the Cardinals during the opening rounds of the heptathlon, tallying a fourth-place finish in the 200m dash (25.62), an eighth-place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.57), in addition to posting second in the high jump (5-4.50) and fourth in the shot put (34-5.00).

Another Cardinal competing alongside Lorenz in the heptathlon is Lindsay Wallace (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson). She clocked in at 16.47 in the 100m hurdles and 27.48 in the 200m dash, in addition to tallying a leap of 4-9.50 in the high jump and distance of 25-8.00 in the shot put.

In the field events, Jorden Traver (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) added top efforts in the javelin throw (96-07) and hammer throw (147-10). Marie Lumpkin (Losantville, Ind./Union) and Lywanna Melvin (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green) also added distances of 148-01 and 125-09 in the hammer throw, respectively.
