MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State outdoor track & field team travels to Ohio’s Goldsberry Track & Field Complex for this week’s 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The three-day event, which runs Thursday through Saturday, kicks off at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with action in the women’s hammer throw. The top eight performers from each event will be scored based on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale.
Fans can follow the action throughout the meet with live results at the following link: http://timerhub.com/get_web_index.php?page=finishtimingresults.com/2014/05-15-MAC/
Last season, the Cardinals placed 12th among the 12 league schools at the championship meet with four points. Based on this season’s MAC performance list, Ball State is poised to score in three events at this year’s meet.
In the second season of automatic qualifying standards, the Cardinals will send 19 individuals and a pair of relay teams to the outdoor championship meet, which is seven more individuals than last season and six more than BSU sent to the 2014 MAC Indoor Championships. Under the current format, each event is capped at 20 participants. If 20 student-athletes did not post automatic marks in an event, entrants were selected going down the conference’s performance list.
Junior Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) is poised to score in a pair of events for the Cardinals, ranking third in the league in the long jump (6.04m) and sixth in the 100m dash (11:92). Both events are set for Saturday, with the long jump starting at 1 p.m. and the 100m dash semifinals at 2:50 p.m.
Junior Haley Austin (Avon, Ind./Avon), who was the only Ball State student-athlete to score at this season’s indoor league meet, enters the outdoor championships ranked fifth in the MAC in the high jump (1.70m). The high jump, which takes place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, will also feature junior Mindy Marx (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) who is seeded 13th (1.65m).
Sophomore thrower Michaela Hull (Bloomington, Ind./South) is qualified for three individual events, ranking 13th in the javelin (35.92m), 17th in the discus (44.36m) and 20th in the shot put (12.20m).
Ball State also has a pair of student-athletes entered in two individual events in senior thrower Erin Walker (Laurell Hill, Fla./Troy University) and senior distance runner Madelyn Webster (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg). Walker qualified for both the hammer throw (12th at 50.54m) and the discus (15th at 45.59m), while Webster is entered in the 1500m run (15th at 4:41.74) and the 10,000m run.
