T&F Headed To Kent State For MAC Championships

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track & field team travels to Kent State’s Field House for this weekend’s 2014 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The two-day event kicks off Friday at 10 a.m. with action in the women’s weight throw. The top eight performers from each event will score based on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale.

Last season, the Cardinals placed 12 among the 12 league schools at the championship meet with seven total points.

In the second season of automatic qualifying standards, the Cardinals will send 13 individuals and a pair of relay teams to this season’s meet. Under the current format, each event is capped at 20 participants. If 20 student-athletes did not post automatic marks in an event, entrants were selected going down the conference’s performance list.

Based on the 2014 seedings, the Cardinals are poised to score in six events.

Ball State’s best event is the high jump with junior Haley Austin (Avon, Ind./Avon) and redshirt junior Mindy Marx (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) seeded fifth (1.74m) and seventh (1.70m), respectively.

Redshirt sophomore Christina Crawford (Belleville, Mich./Romulus) is the only Ball State student-athlete qualified for two individual events, ranking sixth in the MAC in the long jump (5.84m) and 15th in the 60m dash (7.77).

In the triple jump, sophomore Zenée Gadson (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) enters the meet ranked sixth in the conference at 11.74m.

Rounding out Ball State’s individuals in the top eight of their respective events is redshirt sophomore Marie Lumpkin (Losantville, Ind./Union) who qualified eighth in the weight throw at 18.09m.

Ball State is also ranked seventh in the MAC in the distance medley relay at 12:23.78, with freshman Jordan Timmons (Bargersville, Ind./Center Grove), sophomore Becca Kropf (Goshen, Ind./Fairfield), redshirt sophomore Madelyn Webster (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and junior Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) scheduled to run for the Cardinals.
