Mellen Named To Outdoor T&F Academic All-MAC Squad
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State track & field senior distance runner MaryKate Mellen completed the 2012-13 Academic All-Mid-American Conference sweep Thursday morning by being named to the outdoor squad for the 2013 season as announced by the league office.
Mellen is one of just five MAC student-athletes to be named to the Academic All-MAC squads for cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field during the 2012-13 academic year. The league’s other three-award winners are Maddie Ribant (Central Michigan), Paige Foster (Bowling Green), Erica Howes (Miami) and Juli Accurso (Ohio).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. A total of 36 student-athletes were named to this year’s outdoor squad.
Mellen, a telecommunications major with a 3.89 grade-point average, placed fifth in the 1500m run at the MAC Outdoor Championships with a time of 4:28.77 to collect all four of BSU’s points at the meet. She turned in a career-fast time of 4:28.71 in the 1500m run at the Polytan Invitational, and also led the Cardinals with a career-fast time of 2:15.05 in the 800m run at the Gina Relays, which is the 12th-best time in the MAC this season.
During the 2012-13 indoor season, Mellen placed third in the mile run at the 2013 MAC Indoor Championships with a school-record time of 4:50.10 to collect six of the Cardinals’ seven points in the meet. She also turned in career-fast times in the 800m run (2:14.29 – 10th-best in the MAC), the 3,000m run (9:54.44 – 13th-best in the MAC) and the 5,000m run (17:40.89 – 20th-best in the MAC) over the course of the season.
During the 2012 cross country season, Mellen led the Cardinals in all seven meets while also posting four top 10 finishes. She recorded a career-fast 5K time of 18:08.7 to win the Ball State Invitational, while logging a career-best 6K time of 22:09 to place 93rd at the Great Lakes Regional. She also earned a 29th-place finish at the 6K MAC Championship with a time of 22:29.0.
